ASK AN EXPERT: Will occasional basketball workouts during X-country season significantly effect my son’s running performance?

My son is a cross country runner and basketball player who wants to do basketball workouts once or twice a week during cross country season to try to keep his basketball skills sharp and be in better ‘basketball’ shape when b-ball season begins. My concern is whether he would be doing any harm to his cross country performance by doing workouts that focus more on sprinting and building muscle in the shoulders and thighs. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
