Ask an Expert: Jump Pits

Hello:
I am entering my first year as an Athletic Director at a public middle school. My track & field coaches have expressed a need and desire to have a long jump and triple jump sand pit. In the past, they have jumped into gymnastics mats. I personally agree with them that sand pits are a measure to ensure safety of the student athletes. What is the ITCCCA’s stance on this issue?

Thank you for your time!

  1. Sand pits are definitely better. The pads will not give as much and could easily cause an ankle to be injured. Also, by using mats on a consistent basis it will cause an alteration in there technique since it is a totally different surface.
