For the fourth year in 2013, Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association wishes to award Athlete-of-the-Year honors to Illinois Track &Field/Cross Country athletes who have demonstrated remarkable achievements.
Madeline Perez (Glenbard West) A junior, she became only the third girl in the largest class to complete the distance triple of winning State titles in Cross Country, the 3200 meters, and 1600 meters. The others who accomplished this feat were Dana Miroballi of Wheeling in 86-87 and in 87-88 and Maria Cicero of York in 2000-01. Madeline won the State Cross Country Championship with an all-time IHSA State Record time of 16:02, breaking Beattie’s 16:22 mark. At the State Track & Field Meet, she won the 3200 meters in a time of 10:22.29, which is the second fastest winning Class AAA time behind Cicero’s 10:17.28. She completed the day by winning the 1600 meters in a time of 4:52.24. Indoors, she won the IPTT Meet in the 1600 with a time of 4:53.60, which ranked 7th in the US.
Jack Keelan (St. Ignatius) A senior, he won both the 3200 meters and the 1600 meters at the Class AAA IHSA State Meet. As he had, also, won the Class AAA Cross Country, he became the one of the few athletes in history to complete the distance triple of winning cross country, the 3200, and the 1600 in the same school year. He won the Cross Country State Meet in a time of 14:05 for the 3-mile course. At the IHSA State Track & Field Meet, he ran 8:57.61 and 4:12.11 to win his titles. Previously, he had ran the 3200 meters in an outstanding, 8:50.74, the #1 time in Illinois and #8 in US, and the 1600 in 4:09.62, also, #1 in Illinois and #11 in US.
