Coach Renee Zellner has coached track and field for 42 years. She was Fremd High Schools first girl’s track and field head coach. She has been the men and women’s track coach at Harper College for the past 36 years. During her time at Harper College Her men’s team has won 5 NJCAA D3 National Championships and 2 runner up places.  Her women’s team has won one championship, the first ever in Harper College’s history. Many of her athletes earned All American status.  Amongst her many National champions 10 were throwers. Coach Zellner teams have won numerous NJCAA Region IV championships for both men and women.

Coach Zellner has served as NJCAA  DI Women’s Coaches Association President, for several years, she has been an officer for NJCAA DI Men’s Coaches Association, and has served many years as the Vice President for the NJCAA D3 coaches association. She was inducted into the NJCAA Division I  Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame, NJCAA Region IV  Coaches Hall of Fame, voted NJCAA D3 Men’s Coach of the year, and Women’s Coach of the year.

She is also a USATF Master Official and has her Level I Coaching Certificate.  Together with Jim Aikens she has hosted the A-Z throwers clinic for 12 years.

Joe Parks – Palatine HS

Coach Parks owns the rare distinction of leading two separate schools and different genders to IHSA state cross country trophies in his first year at the helm as head coach, having led St. Charles North boys to runner-up in 2006 and Palatine girls to a state title in 2009. Both seasons earned him ITCCCA coach of the year honors.

In Coach Parks’ eight seasons as a head cross country coach he has lead his teams to four IHSA state trophies (SCN boys – 2006 2nd / Palatine – 2009 1st, 2010 2nd, & 2014 2nd) and has led three teams to Nike Cross Nationals (Palatine – 2009, 2010, & 2014). As well his teams have captured seven IHSA Regional, six IHSA Sectional, and four conference team titles. Individually he has helped guide his cross country athletes to earn 40 All-Conference honors, 19 IHSA Regional medals, 16 IHSA Sectional medals, and 11 All-State medals.

On the track Coach Parks has been fortunate to coach state qualifiers in the 3200m relay and 1600m run in all eight years as a track coach. He has also coached multiple qualifiers in the 3200m and 800m runs. He has coached the 3200m relay to all-state finishes seven of those eight years with finishes of 7th, 4th, 3rd, 4th, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd respectively. He helped guide Sarah McIntosh to a 1600m title in 2011, along with Ruth Allen (800m – 2010) and Kelly O’Brien (1600m – 2013) to runner-up finishes. In 2007 his St. Charles North quartet of Matt DeSilva, Chris Rosso, Chris DeSilva, and Mike McDonnell placed 3rd in the 4 x Mile at the Nike Outdoor Nationals to earn All-American status.

Coach Parks has coached over 30 athletes that have gone on to compete at the collegiate level. Coach Parks is an avid runner himself, along with his wife, Jennifer, who was a member of three Palatine state cross country trophy teams in the mid-90’s. They have four children, Sophia (7), Eli (5), Josephine (3), and Tate (2 months).

  Download Notes 11709460_866064250127615_2350723920284272970_nCoach Tommy Badon has coached at every level of the coaching spectrum in a career that has spanned over 30 years. He is currently the Head Track Coach and Assistant Football Coach at Lafayette Christian Academy in Lafayette, Louisiana. In his first year at LCA in 2015, the boys and girls teams captured the 7-1A district titles, and his boys team claimed the Region II-1A crown. Badon moved to LCA after a 121/2-year stint at Westminster Christian Academy, where he oversaw an athletic department that grew and matured into one of the most respected programs in Louisiana. As head football coach at Westminster, Badon produced five state quarterfinalists, eleven consecutive playoff appearances, an undefeated regular season in 2010, and compiled an overall record of 90-41. In track, his girls’ teams won 9 consecutive district titles, and four regional championships, and the 1A State Championship in 2013. His boys’ teams captured five district crowns and two additional regional titles. He has coached multiple individual state champions, including the only hurdler to win three consecutive 300 hurdle titles in any division. Badon was named the 1A State Coach of the Year in 2013, and was awarded the Outstanding Coach award at the district level 15 times.

Badon’s career began in 1981 at his alma mater, Teurlings Catholic High School in Lafayette, Louisiana. He won one district title while at TCH, and was the defensive coordinator for a team that went undefeated and unscored upon for 11 straight games in 1982. After a six-year stint at TCH, Badon moved across town to Lafayette High School At LHS, Badon coached Mike St. Julien, a 7-2 high jumper and one of the best high school jumpers in the country, as well as Pat Frederick, a 16-8 pole vaulter and member of the 1988 U.S. National Junior Team. In 1987, Badon moved to Blinn College in Brenham, Texas and helped the Buccaneers capture two Indoor National Championships and two Outdoor National Championships in his two years at the school. From 1989-97, Badon was the assistant track and field coach as his alma mater, UL-Lafayette (then University of Southwestern Louisiana). While there, the Ragin’ Cajuns won 14 Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships, and Badon coached over 20 NCAA All-Americans. During his time at UL-Lafayette, Badon also coached Hollis Conway, the world’s No. 1 high jumper in the early 1990‘s and still the United State record holder in the indoor high jump. His relay teams at UL were ranked third nationally in the Track and Field Relay rankings for the 1993 season.

Badon has been active in Coaching Education since 1987. He was a USATF Level I and Level II Instructor for 20 years, and has served as both a TFTC Instructor and an SCC Instructor in the USTFCCCA Coaches Education program since the inception of the that program. Badon is an active member in the LTFCA, and has spoken at numerous state association conventions throughout his career, as well as presenting at the USTFCCCA Annual Convention in 203. He has been married for 25 years to Susan Domingues and is the father of Blaise, Bryce and Beau.

Jumps Training | Nathan Taylor, Cornell (retired) | North Field house
  Download Presentation unnamed-2Nathan Taylor has been the most successful coach in Ivy League history as he has guided teams to 16 conference titles between 2002 and 2015. His extensive knowledge and experience in the sprints, hurdles, and jumps turned Cornell into the sprinting and jumping powerhouse of the League and across the country. In 2014 the Ivy’s were selected the 6th best track conference in the country.

Between 2007 to 2015, 40 of his Cornell athletes garnered All-American status, including two national champions in the triple jump (Rayon Taylor in 2007 and 2012 Olympian Muhammad Halim in 2008). Cornell has been a Top 20 Division 1 team for 12 of the last 13 years. During that time, Taylor has been selected the NCAA Regional Coach of the Year 13 times. He has had five athletes compete at the IAAF World Championships. Prior coming to Cornell, Taylor coached both at the high school level at Charlottesville (Va.) High, Western Albemarle High (Va.), Good Hope School (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Milton Academy (Mass.) and as a college assistant at the University of Virginia and University of Pennsylvania.

In July 2011, Taylor was selected to serve as the U.S.V.I. head coach for international meets extending through the 2016 Olympics. Taylor — who attended school on the Islands — represented the USVI as a decathlete in his young days and now directs the training of nearly a dozen aspiring Olympians.

About the Instructor: Rich Larsen

Rich Larsen is entering his 15th year coaching varsity, junior varsity, and freshman girls’ pole-vault at Lake Park High School. Throughout his coaching career, Larsen has sent six athletes to the State Meet (three of whom placed in the top ten). He also helped several of his vaulters earn pole-vaulting scholarships to universities around the country, including Cornell University, Illinois State University, University of Illinois at Chicago, North Central College, and Millikin University.

Larsen was a Lake Park pole-vaulter himself from 1966–1969. Though the team had no pole-vault coach, Larsen taught himself how to a vault and set a PR of 13’. He also set a long-standing LPHS indoor record with a jump of 12’9” in 1968. He was an accomplished high school gymnast and received a half-ride gymnastics scholarship to Northern Illinois University, where he graduated with a comprehensive degree in biology. Larsen went on to compete in pole-vault throughout much of his adult life. As a firefighter with the Hoffman Estates Fire Department, he participated in the biennial World Police and Fire Games where he regularly medaled in pole-vaulting and the Toughest Competitor Alive—an eight-part, decathlon-esque competition that included a three-mile run, bench press, rope climb, and a pull-up contest.

Kernie has coached over 24 conference championship teams & 26 runners up finishes as well 5 regional championships and over 50 major invitational wins. During his career he has coached over 25 state medalists and numerous conference & regional medalist. Coach Gilliam is a member of the Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame and a former president of the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association. Currently, Kernie serves as the Clinic Director for the Michigan Track Coaches Association as well as the Coaches Education Chairperson. Kernie is an accomplished clinician who has spoken at several clinics around the country including the Michigan, Indiana and Ohio Clinics.
Beginning High Jump | Tom Roderick, North Central College | Room 314
  Download presentation Tom Roderick is a veteran of 47 years, coaching Track and Field and Cross Country at the junior high, high school and college levels. He has coached his Cross Country teams to two state championships (St. Charles East), one runner up and four other top-five finishes. Also at the high school level, he has coached four different individuals to state championships in the high jump and during his 13-year tenure at North Central College, 3 of his high jumpers earned a total of 7 All-American awards. In 2012, his male high hurdle shuttle relay recorded the fastest time in Division III at the Drake Relays. During his final year at North Central in 2015, he coached one of his female hurdlers to a second place finish in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Roderick is a past president and clinic director of ITCCCA and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2002. He has been asked to make numerous presentations on the high jump and hurdles at state, regional, and national conferences and is currently serving as an IHSA official.

  Download Presentation unnamedNick Buckvar has been coaching track & field for the past 10 years producing 50 State Medalists and 19 State Champions. As a head coach, Buckvar’s McCluer Comets finished 2nd at the Missouri State Championships in 2012. As an assistant coach at Ladue High School (MO) and CBC High School (MO), he has been a part of 8 State Trophy Teams, including a State Championship at Ladue HS in 2009. Coach Buckvar has qualified a 4x400m relay team to the state meet every season including state titles in 2011, 2013, and 2014 while being only the third team in State history to run under 3:15. In 2013 he received the MTCCCA’s Distinguished Coach Award. In addition to high school, Coach Buckvar is the Head Coach of the St Louis Lightning Track Club, and has served as an Assistant State Selection Chair and Boys Sprint Coach for Team Missouri at the Great Southwest Track & Field Classic.

Jim Aikens has been coaching the throws since 1984. He has been the head coach at William Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois since 1990. During this time Jim’s throwers have earned medals at national competitions, won four state championships and 16 other state medals. Jim’s throwers have also won numerous sectional and conference championships.  Jim has had 5 throwers toss the shot 60 feet or better.  Jim has earned his USA Track & Field Level 1 and Level 2 certification.  In 2014 Jim was chosen as one of the eight finalist for the National High School Coaches Association coach of the year.  He has also served as President for the Illinois Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association and is a member of their Hall of Fame. Jim is currently the Illinois representative for the National Throws Coaches Association.  In the past 16 years Jim’s teams have won seven conference championships, six sectional championships, and four top 7 finishes at the Illinois state meet. Coach Aikens has published several articles and videos about the Throws and training for the throws and is a much sought after speaking clinician.

He also helped several of his vaulters earn pole-vaulting scholarships to universities around the country, including Cornell University, Illinois State University, University of Illinois at Chicago, North Central College, and Millikin University.

Larsen was a Lake Park pole-vaulter himself from 1966–1969. Though the team had no pole-vault coach, Larsen taught himself how to a vault and set a PR of 13’. He also set a long-standing LPHS indoor record with a jump of 12’9” in 1968. He was an accomplished high school gymnast and received a half-ride gymnastics scholarship to Northern Illinois University, where he graduated with a comprehensive degree in biology. Larsen went on to compete in pole-vault throughout much of his adult life. As a firefighter with the Hoffman Estates Fire Department, he participated in the biennial World Police and Fire Games where he regularly medaled in pole-vaulting and the Toughest Competitor Alive—an eight-part, decathlon-esque competition that included a three-mile run, bench press, rope climb, and a pull-up contest.

Has recently been a head boys’ coach at St. Charles North High School and presently an assistant coach at Burlington Central High School where I coach boys’/girls’ hurdles and horizontal jumps and also boys’ sprints/sprint relays
Have coached state qualifiers and state champions as early as the mid-90’s and as late as last year where my hurdler, Lucas Ege, won both the 110 HH and 300 IM. Lucas also set the state record in the 300 IM for both the 2014 and 2015 seasons.Numerous athletes throughout the last three decades who have gone on to compete on the college level and on scholarship.

Certified by USTFCCCA in the areas of strength and conditioning, hurdles, sprints, and sprint relays.

Two daughters, one who presently attends DePaul University and is the first freshman in the school’s history to compete on the varsity level.

In that time, his horizontal jumpers have rewritten every school record and have been an integral part of the last five state trophy teams from Lake Park including four state championships in a row. Specifically, in the last five years, coach Kaberna has coached twelve all state horizontal jump athletes including seven top three finishes in that time span. In the triple jump, three different athletes have won or finished second at the state championships for the last five years running.

Coach Buckvar has qualified a 4x400m relay team to the state meet every season including state titles in 2011, 2013, and 2014 while being only the third team in State history to run under 3:15. In 2013 he received the MTCCCA’s Distinguished Coach Award. In addition to high school, Coach Buckvar is the Head Coach of the St Louis Lightning Track Club, and has served as an Assistant State Selection Chair and Boys Sprint Coach for Team Missouri at the Great Southwest Track & Field Classic.

He is currently the Head Track Coach and Assistant Football Coach at Lafayette Christian Academy in Lafayette, Louisiana. In his first year at LCA in 2015, the boys and girls teams captured the 7-1A district titles, and his boys team claimed the Region II-1A crown. Badon moved to LCA after a 121/2-year stint at Westminster Christian Academy, where he oversaw an athletic department that grew and matured into one of the most respected programs in Louisiana. As head football coach at Westminster, Badon produced five state quarterfinalists, eleven consecutive playoff appearances, an undefeated regular season in 2010, and compiled an overall record of 90-41. In track, his girls’ teams won 9 consecutive district titles, and four regional championships, and the 1A State Championship in 2013. His boys’ teams captured five district crowns and two additional regional titles. He has coached multiple individual state champions, including the only hurdler to win three consecutive 300 hurdle titles in any division. Badon was named the 1A State Coach of the Year in 2013, and was awarded the Outstanding Coach award at the district level 15 times.

Badon’s career began in 1981 at his alma mater, Teurlings Catholic High School in Lafayette, Louisiana. He won one district title while at TCH, and was the defensive coordinator for a team that went undefeated and unscored upon for 11 straight games in 1982. After a six-year stint at TCH, Badon moved across town to Lafayette High School At LHS, Badon coached Mike St. Julien, a 7-2 high jumper and one of the best high school jumpers in the country, as well as Pat Frederick, a 16-8 pole vaulter and member of the 1988 U.S. National Junior Team. In 1987, Badon moved to Blinn College in Brenham, Texas and helped the Buccaneers capture two Indoor National Championships and two Outdoor National Championships in his two years at the school. From 1989-97, Badon was the assistant track and field coach as his alma mater, UL-Lafayette (then University of Southwestern Louisiana). While there, the Ragin’ Cajuns won 14 Indoor and Outdoor Conference Championships, and Badon coached over 20 NCAA All-Americans. During his time at UL-Lafayette, Badon also coached Hollis Conway, the world’s No. 1 high jumper in the early 1990‘s and still the United State record holder in the indoor high jump. His relay teams at UL were ranked third nationally in the Track and Field Relay rankings for the 1993 season.

Badon has been active in Coaching Education since 1987. He was a USATF Level I and Level II Instructor for 20 years, and has served as both a TFTC Instructor and an SCC Instructor in the USTFCCCA Coaches Education program since the inception of the that program. Badon is an active member in the LTFCA, and has spoken at numerous state association conventions throughout his career, as well as presenting at the USTFCCCA Annual Convention in 203. He has been married for 25 years to Susan Domingues and is the father of Blaise, Bryce and Beau.

  Download Presentation unnamed-2Nathan Taylor has been the most successful coach in Ivy League history as he has guided teams to 16 conference titles between 2002 and 2015. His extensive knowledge and experience in the sprints, hurdles, and jumps turned Cornell into the sprinting and jumping powerhouse of the League and across the country. In 2014 the Ivy’s were selected the 6th best track conference in the country.

Between 2007 to 2015, 40 of his Cornell athletes garnered All-American status, including two national champions in the triple jump (Rayon Taylor in 2007 and 2012 Olympian Muhammad Halim in 2008). Cornell has been a Top 20 Division 1 team for 12 of the last 13 years. During that time, Taylor has been selected the NCAA Regional Coach of the Year 13 times. He has had five athletes compete at the IAAF World Championships. Prior coming to Cornell, Taylor coached both at the high school level at Charlottesville (Va.) High, Western Albemarle High (Va.), Good Hope School (U.S. Virgin Islands) and Milton Academy (Mass.) and as a college assistant at the University of Virginia and University of Pennsylvania.

In July 2011, Taylor was selected to serve as the U.S.V.I. head coach for international meets extending through the 2016 Olympics. Taylor — who attended school on the Islands — represented the USVI as a decathlete in his young days and now directs the training of nearly a dozen aspiring Olympians.

In that time, he has coached 22 state qualifiers, including 12 in the triple jump. Of those qualifiers, one became a state champion and three were state runners-up. Additionally, coach Hilby’s athletes have set new school records in the long jump, triple jump, and 300m hurdles during his tenure.

Coach Renee Zellner has coached track and field for 42 years. She was Fremd High Schools first girl’s track and field head coach. She has been the men and women’s track coach at Harper College for the past 36 years. During her time at Harper College Her men’s team has won 5 NJCAA D3 National Championships and 2 runner up places.  Her women’s team has won one championship, the first ever in Harper College’s history. Many of her athletes earned All American status.  Amongst her many National champions 10 were throwers. Coach Zellner teams have won numerous NJCAA Region IV championships for both men and women.

Coach Zellner has served as NJCAA  DI Women’s Coaches Association President, for several years, she has been an officer for NJCAA DI Men’s Coaches Association, and has served many years as the Vice President for the NJCAA D3 coaches association. She was inducted into the NJCAA Division I  Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame, NJCAA Region IV  Coaches Hall of Fame, voted NJCAA D3 Men’s Coach of the year, and Women’s Coach of the year.

She is also a USATF Master Official and has her Level I Coaching Certificate.  Together with Jim Aikens she has hosted the A-Z throwers clinic for 12 years.

Coach Gilliam has been coaching track & field and cross country for over 31 years. Kernie has coached over 24 conference championship teams & 26 runners up finishes as well 5 regional championships and over 50 major invitational wins. During his career he has coached over 25 state medalists and numerous conference & regional medalist. Coach Gilliam is a member of the Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame and a former president of the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association. Currently, Kernie serves as the Clinic Director for the Michigan Track Coaches Association as well as the Coaches Education Chairperson. Kernie is an accomplished clinician who has spoken at several clinics around the country including the Michigan, Indiana and Ohio Clinics.
