Jim served the past six years as Head Coach for Men’s and Women’s Track and Field at the University of Oklahoma where he was named the 2016 Big 12 Coach of the Year.  Prior to Oklahoma, VanHootegem also served several stints as an assistant coach including stops at Texas A&M, Miami and Arkansas. During that time, his teams claimed twelve NCAA Championships, twenty-three Final Four finishes and twenty-seven conference titles.  From 2009-2011, Texas A&M recorded the only “Triple Double” in NCAA sports history by winning both the men’s and the women’s national championships in the same sport for three consecutive years.  

He has been responsible for coaching individuals to 122 All-American performances.  He has also coached over a dozen athletes who have competed in international competitions most notably Fabrice Lapierre who in 2010 won the IAAF World Championships in the long jump.  He also coached Lapierre to the Australian national record.  He has also coached national record holders for Canada, Great Britain and St. Kitts and Nevis.  

During his time at Texas A&M he was recognized as the 2009 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Assistant Coach of the Year as well as being a three-time USTFCCCA Region Assistant Coach of the Year.  While at Miami, they were awarded five times as the Big East Conference Staff of the Year.  Finally, VanHootegem has also been active as an instructor with national certification programs with USA Track and Field and the USTFCCCA.
