Rachel Lau, Madison Ronzone named 2016 George Dekan Scholarship winners

ITCCCA is proud to announce the 2016 winners of the George Dekan Memorial Scholarship. The following Illinois student-athletes will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Rachael Lau graduated from Plainfield North High School as their esteemed valedictorian, and will be attending Duke University where she intends to major in Biomedical Engineering. A proud member of the IHSA All-State Academic Team, Rachael finished in 11th place at this year’s Cross Country State Championship. Of her growth as a runner, she writes, “At some time during the past six years, running was no longer just a hobby: it became my lifestyle.”

Madison Mary Ronzone graduated from Rosary High School and will be majoring in Chemistry / Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame. A runner-up in both the 1600 run and 4 x 800 relay in State competition, Madison was also named a St. Catherine of Sienna Scholar. Of her commitment to her teammates, she writes, “As a captain of the Cross Country and Track teams, I strive to pour every ounce of inspiration and enthusiasm into the younger members of the team.”

The Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches’ Association, as well as family and friends of George Dekan, proudly sponsor the George Dekan Memorial Scholarship to commemorate the life of an amazing individual, and to assist local student-athletes of Cross Country and / or Track and Field with their college expenditures.
